 America's AI Boom Faces a Massive Power Problem: 1,066 GW of Data Center Requests



The American AI boom has created an extraordinary queue of proposed electricity demand.

Data-center developers have reportedly requested approximately 1,066 GW of grid capacity — an amount vastly larger than the power currently consumed by the entire U.S. data-center industry.


But a grid interconnection request does not mean a project will actually be built. Many projects are speculative, lack financing, have not secured land or equipment, or cannot obtain electricity quickly enough.

According to Wood Mackenzie, only around 28% of the requested capacity may ultimately move forward. That leaves hundreds of gigawatts as potential "phantom" or speculative projects.

The result is one of the biggest infrastructure bottlenecks in the AI race: there may be far more data-center plans than the American power system can realistically accommodate.
