BREAKING: Lionel Messi Announces Retirement from International Football at Age 39

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, who mesmerized the football world for over two decades, has officially announced his retirement from international football.

The 39-year-old legend, who led Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title, confirmed the news with an emotional post on his Instagram account. He said that while the decision was painful, this is the right time to say goodbye.

In his social media message, Messi wrote:

"I loved representing the national team and I always will. I gave everything I had, and now I have nothing left to give. There are also many talented young players coming through, and they deserve their chance."

According to Messi, he drafted this farewell message two days after Argentina's extra-time loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final on July 21. He also revealed that the passing of his father in early August played a major role in finalizing his decision.

Messi retires as Argentina's most successful player ever. He scored 927 career goals, making him the second-highest goal scorer in football history. For Argentina, he played 207 matches and scored 125 goals.

Although he has retired from international football, Messi will continue to play for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS).
