Iran says door to talks still open, 6 months into war with US

Tehran, Aug 28 2026 - Six months into a war with the United States, Iran has left the door open for diplomacy but only if Washington abandons its pressure campaign.

"Putting diplomacy back on track isn’t impossible. It hinges on US understanding of one simple fact: pressure doesn’t work"

Araghchi said the US must "build trust, speak respectfully, acknowledge our rights and uphold commitments" for talks to resume.

CURRENT SITUATION

The War: The conflict, started by the US and Israel in late February 2026, has now reached the 6-month mark.

Ceasefire & Deal: A ceasefire was agreed in April and a memorandum of understanding was signed in June, but no final peace deal has been reached.

US Pressure: Washington has declared "economic warfare" against Tehran and launched a US naval counter-blockade of Iranian ports, squeezing petrol supplies.

Strait of Hormuz: The key waterway remains closed by Iran since the start of the war, causing a global energy crisis.

DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS

In the latest effort, Araghchi met with Qatar's Prime Minister in Tehran on Thursday to discuss de-escalation. Mediators including Pakistan, Oman, and Qatar have been trying for months to end the conflict.

However, Iran's Foreign Ministry said there are currently no direct negotiations with the United States.

SUMMARY
