KATHMANDU: Rescuers in Nepal have pulled two workers alive from a hydropower tunnel, nine days after catastrophic floods devastated towns and swept away villages.

The two survivors were found inside the tunnel where they had been trapped since flash floods hit on August 27. Their rescue has raised hopes that emergency teams may still be able to reach a dozen other workers believed to be trapped deeper inside.

The floods, caused by days of heavy monsoon rain, destroyed homes, bridges, and entire villages across central Nepal. Hundreds are reported dead or missing, and thousands have been displaced.

Search and rescue teams are using heavy equipment and drones to clear debris and pump water from the tunnel. Officials say conditions remain dangerous but they are "working against the clock" to find more survivors.

The hydropower project was one of several damaged in the disaster, which is now considered one of Nepal’s worst flooding events in recent years.
