Canada Loses 42,000 Jobs in August, Shocks Economists

Breaking :  Canada Loses 42,000 Jobs in August, Shocks Economists

OTTAWA: Canada lost 42,000 jobs in August, a sharp reversal from expectations, as economists had predicted modest job gains for the month.

Statistics Canada reported Friday that the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.4 per cent, as fewer people were looking for work.

The losses were concentrated in the private sector, with declines in manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade. Public sector employment saw a slight increase.

The report adds pressure on the Bank of Canada ahead of its next interest rate decision, as a cooling labour market could push policymakers to consider rate cuts to support growth.

Experts say the job losses signal that higher borrowing costs and economic uncertainty are starting to weigh more heavily on Canadian businesses and households.
