JAKARTA: More than 150,000 passengers have been left stranded after a volcanic eruption in Indonesia forced authorities to temporarily suspend operations at eight airports.

The eruption sent a massive ash cloud into the sky, prompting aviation officials to close airports as a safety precaution. Ash can damage aircraft engines and reduce visibility, making flights extremely dangerous.

Airlines have cancelled hundreds of domestic and international flights. Airports affected include major hubs in the region, causing widespread delays and disruptions across Southeast Asia.

Authorities say they are monitoring the volcano closely and will reopen airspace only when it is safe to do so. Travelers have been advised to check with airlines for updates and prepare for extended delays.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is prone to frequent volcanic activity.
