A North Carolina teenager has died after contracting a rare and deadly brain-eating amoeba called Naegleria fowleri, state health officials confirmed.

According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the amoeba is commonly found in warm freshwater such as ponds, lakes, and rivers, and it grows best in hotter water.
Health officials warned that the amoeba does not cause illness if it is swallowed. However, it can be fatal if contaminated water is forced up the nose and into the brain. This can happen during activities like jumping into water, diving, water-skiing, or other water sports.


Naegleria fowleri causes a rare brain infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis, which is almost always fatal. Cases are extremely rare but most often occur during the summer months.

Officials are urging the public to take precautions when swimming in warm freshwater, including avoiding stirring up sediment and using nose clips during water activities.
