Every Al search has a cost we can't see. And it's not just electricity.


According to a new Ceres report, data centers in 7 U.S. states are responsible for 3.4 trillion gallons of freshwater withdrawals every year just to generate the power they run on.


States with the highest impact:

🔵California: 1.4 trillion gallons
🔵Virginia: 753 billion gallons

Texas, Arizona, Georgia, Ohio, Illinois: Also major data center hubs

Why this matters:

Nearly two-thirds of these power plants are located in areas already facing high water stress. As Al grows, the demand for water to cool data centers and power them will keep rising.

To put it in perspective: This amount is about 12x the combined annual water use of Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Washington D.C.
